Frequently Asked Questions

What is a shamanic drum?

A shamanic drum, also known as a spirit drum, is a sacred tool used for spiritual practices and ceremonies across many indigenous cultures for thousands of years. Found in traditions across Siberia, Asia, the Americas, Scandinavia, and the British Isles, it is traditionally made from a wooden hoop and animal hide.

The drum connects the physical and spiritual realms. It carries the heartbeat of Mother Earth, and its deep, resonant sound can bring about trance states, inner journeys, deep meditation, and healing. It can also help shift heavy energies from the body, support sound healing, and guide the practitioner in shamanic journeys.

Do I need training to use a shamanic drum?

No formal training is required for personal use. Many people feel called to the drum intuitively, and the relationship that unfolds between you and your drum is often deeply personal. Over time, with practice, you will learn how to use it in a way that resonates with you.

If you’re new to the drum, attending a drumming circle can be a great place to start. I recommend:

If you plan to use your drum for healing others, ethical and energetic training is advisable. The ISIS School offers a variety of ceremonial training, and Lorna McLean provides training in Reiki sound healing.

How can I experience drum healing for myself?

Joining a drumming circle is a wonderful and affordable way to experience the power of the drum. You can also explore 1:1 work with trained Shamanic Practitioners. I recommend:

  • Rhonda Spence, Celtic Wise Woman (Dundee-based Shamanic Practitioner & Priestess of the Moon)
Rhonda offers personal healing, cacao ceremonies, and gatherings aligned with the Celtic Wheel of the Year.

What if my drum or rattle gets wet?

Avoid playing your drum in very cold or damp conditions regularly. However, it’s okay if it gets a little wet now and then. Simply place it in a warm, dry place and allow it to air-dry naturally for 24 hours. Avoid using direct heat (fires, radiators) as this can warp or dry out the drum.

If your drum dries crinkled, you can lightly mist it with water and place it near indirect sunlight or warmth to help it retighten.

Rattles should ideally be kept dry, but most Star Onyx rattles are sealed with lacquer to protect them from moisture.

How long does a shamanic drum last?

A well-made, well-cared-for drum can last a lifetime. Drums are traditionally passed down between practitioners and become treasured spiritual companions. Natural materials may change over time, but with proper care, they will remain strong and vibrant.

How do I care for my drum?

Drums made from animal hide require occasional oiling to retain their elasticity and sound. Signs it may need oiling include a dry, papery feel and flat sound.

Use a lint-free cloth and apply a thin layer of cold-pressed olive or walnut oil to the drum face. Let it absorb in a warm, dry place for 24 hours. For very dry drums, a light mist of water after oiling can help restore the shape.

Store your drum in a soft, waterproof bag and avoid exposing it to extreme heat or cold.
